Taekwondo is a form of empty hand martial arts combat that requires the athlete to use all parts of the body in competition. Taekwondo is a self-defence discipline; the name is derived from the Korean words “tae”, meaning kick, “kwon”, a punch or other blow with the hand or fist, and “do”, which is a way or method of operation.
The Core Values of Taekwondo or more popularly known as the Taekwondo Tenets. The 5 Tenets of Taekwondo are:
- Courtesy
- Integrity
- Perseverance
- Self-control
- Indomitable spirit
Taekwondo will help students develop both their mental and physical discipline as they have to show respect to their teachers, coaches, fellow students and themselves. This can help one to be more grounded and resistant to stress or peer pressure.
Taekwondo develops the students’ athletic abilities and self-awareness, and improves their capabilities in self-defence. Students heightened their concentration, and increase their self-discipline and self-restraint.
Through Taekwondo, as the students accomplish new goals (completing each belt level), their confidence level increases as well. Taekwondo instils a sense of discipline and self-confidence that can carry over to all aspects of the students’ lives.
Selected members of the Taekwondo CCA have the opportunity to represent the school at the National School Games. Through the tournaments, the students would have gained many benefits such as:
- Encouraging higher standards of achievement
- Increasing physical activity
- Building discipline
- Teaching how to lose well/deal with disappointment
- Building camaraderie and teamwork
*Actual training dates will be informed via PG to parents.
